Description

Hardwood Biochar (Activated) is a carbon-rich soil amendment produced by pyrolysing sustainably sourced hardwood at high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment. The result is a highly porous, stable carbon structure that persists in soil for hundreds to thousands of years — unlike compost or other organic inputs that break down and need to be replaced.

The key word is activated. Raw biochar added straight to soil can initially lock up nutrients as its porous structure adsorbs them from the surrounding media. Our biochar has been pre-charged — inoculated with nutrients, biology, or compost — so it arrives ready to contribute from day one rather than drawing resources away from your plants while it equilibrates.

That porosity is the whole point. The honeycomb-like internal surface area of biochar creates an enormous amount of habitat for beneficial microbial life, holding moisture and nutrients in a reservoir that plant roots can draw on between waterings. Over time, a biochar-amended soil becomes increasingly biologically active as microbial colonies establish and expand throughout the carbon matrix.

Carbon

Microbial habitat, moisture and nutrient retention, long-term soil structure, pH buffering and water retention.

Blend at around 2–10% by volume (roughly 100–500 mL per 5 L of media) when building your mix. Charge with compost, castings or a nutrient tea before use so it doesn't tie up nutrients.

Soil people, same as you.

Soil Supply Co. started because we got sick of paying premiums for inputs that under-delivered. If we wouldn't put it in our own soil, it's not on the shelf.
