Description

Rice Hulls are a lightweight, natural soil conditioner that improves drainage, aeration, and soil structure while slowly contributing silica and carbon as they break down. With a slower decomposition rate than most organic mulch materials, rice hulls hold their structure in the soil for extended periods — providing lasting physical benefits long before they fully decompose.

As rice hulls are predominantly composed of silica and carbon, their value lies in what they do for soil structure rather than fertility. The silica content becomes plant-available as the hulls gradually break down, supporting stronger stems, thicker cell walls, and improved pest and disease resistance. The carbon feeds soil biology at a steady background rate without tying up nitrogen the way heavier carbon inputs can at high doses. They won't shift your NPK ratios, making them a safe structural addition to any mix.

Silica, Carbon

Improves soil structure, drainage and aeration, plus slow-release silica and soil carbon.

Rice hulls can be used as a soil amendment mixed through your growing media to improve drainage and prevent compaction, or applied as a surface mulch for moisture retention and weed suppression. They're particularly useful in heavier mixes that need lightening, or as a perlite alternative for growers looking to keep their inputs natural and organic.

Soil people, same as you.

Soil Supply Co. started because we got sick of paying premiums for inputs that under-delivered. If we wouldn't put it in our own soil, it's not on the shelf.
